Fix a scanned PDF with upside-down or out-of-order pages
Short answer
- The least confusing order is delete → rotate → reorder → add page numbers.
- FileLivo’s rotate and reorder tools move the original pages rather than converting them to images, so quality does not drop.
- For a double-sided document scanned as a front stack and a back stack, write down the target order and move pages by their original numbers.
Why this happens
- Feeding mixed-direction sheets into a document feeder produces pages scanned 180° upside down.
- Landscape tables or drawings scanned on a portrait page appear lying on their side.
- A single-sided scanner turns a double-sided document into a stack of fronts followed by a stack of backs: 1, 3, 5 … then 2, 4, 6.
- In phone scanning apps, any page you retake is often added at the end.
The order that saves time
- Delete blank and failed pages. In Delete PDF Pages, mark the pages you want to remove using the previews. You are selecting pages to remove, not to keep, and at least one page must remain. Fewer pages make every later step quicker.
- Fix orientation. In Rotate PDF, use a page’s own buttons to turn just that page, select several pages to turn them together, or rotate the whole document. Each step is 90°, so two steps make 180°.
- Put pages in order. Reorder PDF Pages shows each page’s current position and its original page number. Drag the pages, or use the move buttons on each card, which are easier on a phone.
- Add page numbers, if needed. Do this last, once the order is final, with Add Page Numbers. Otherwise you will have to redo them.
Restoring a double-sided scan quickly
Suppose a five-sheet document produced fronts on pages 1–5 and backs on pages 6–10. If the backs were scanned in reverse (common when you flip the whole stack), page 10 is the back of sheet 1, so the final order is 1, 10, 2, 9, 3, 8, 4, 7, 5, 6. If the backs came out in normal order, it is 1, 6, 2, 7, 3, 8, 4, 9, 5, 10. Write the sequence on paper and move pages by the original number shown on each card; it is much harder to lose track that way.
What these tools do not do
- Rotation turns the whole page in 90° steps. It does not straighten a slightly tilted scan or rotate a single picture within a page.
- Moving or deleting pages does not rewrite printed page numbers or a table of contents.
- Ordinary page content is kept, but bookmarks, form fields, attachments, some annotations and digital signatures may not survive editing. Do not edit a signed document; ask the issuer for a corrected copy instead.
Checking the result
- Page through the downloaded PDF from start to finish and check both orientation and reading order.
- Compare the page count with what you expect after deletions.
- If the cleaned-up file is too large to send, continue with reducing PDF size for email and uploads.
