How to extract only the pages you need from a PDF
Short answer
- If you need only a few pages, use Split PDF; if you want to keep most of the file and drop a few pages, Delete PDF Pages is quicker.
- Type something like “1-3,5” into Split PDF to get one PDF with just those pages, or one PDF per page.
- Pages are copied as they are, so quality does not change, but splitting a digitally signed certificate can break its signature check.
Why send only part of a PDF?
An insurer may need one page of a medical report, an employer may want only the first page of a bank statement, and colleagues may need only your section of a long handbook. Sending the whole file makes the recipient hunt for the relevant part, and it also hands over personal details that have nothing to do with the request. When a file is over an upload limit, removing pages is also a reliable way to make it smaller with no loss of quality.
Split or delete pages?
| Situation | Tool to use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You need 3 pages out of 50 | Split PDF (extract into one PDF) | Type only the pages you want to keep |
| You want to drop a cover and a blank page from 20 | Delete PDF Pages | Click just the pages to remove |
| Each page goes to a different place | Split PDF (individual PDFs) | Every page becomes its own file |
| You need a few pages from several files in one PDF | Split each file, then Merge PDF | Combine the extracted PDFs in any order |
Extracting pages with Split PDF
- Open one PDF in Split PDF. It shows the page count and page previews, 12 at a time; use Show more previews for the rest.
- In Pages to split, enter the pages you want: 5 for one page, 1,3,5 for a list, 8-10 for a range, or a mix such as 1-3,5,8-10.
- Click Extract selected pages into one PDF for a single file, or Split selected pages into individual PDFs for one file per page.
- The single file downloads as selected-pages.pdf. Individual files are listed under Downloads with names like page-3.pdf, keeping the original page number. Rename them to match what the recipient expects before sending.
Pages follow the order you type
The extracted PDF uses the order you entered, so “5,1-3” gives pages 5, 1, 2 and 3 in that order. A page typed twice is included only once. If you need to adjust the order further, open the result in Reorder PDF Pages.
Removing a few pages with Delete PDF Pages
In Delete PDF Pages, click each page you want to remove; it is marked “Will be deleted”. Delete selected pages saves the remaining pages, in their original order, as pages-deleted.pdf. At least one page has to stay. Both tools create a new file and leave your original untouched.
Limits to know
- Pages are copied, not turned into images, so text stays selectable and quality is unchanged. Bookmarks, form fields, attachments and some annotations may not carry over completely.
- If the recipient needs an original digitally signed document, do not split it; extracting pages can stop the signature from validating. Send the file you were issued.
- Password-protected PDFs cannot be opened. Save an unlocked copy first.
- Splitting works on whole pages. It cannot hide part of a page, such as an account number.
Check before you send
- Open the result and confirm every page you need is there, in the right order. Printed page numbers on a scan may not match the PDF page numbers, so pick pages from the previews.
- If you are recombining pages from several files, see what to check before merging PDFs.
- If the file is still too large, continue with reducing PDF size for upload limits.
